Canadians have their poutine, Denverites have their green chile fries.
When it comes to a spicy, greasy, comfort food on the Front Range, a popular go-to is an order of French fries smothered in green chile—maybe tater tots are substituted for the fries, or maybe you add cheese on top too.
To say which ones are the best is difficult because not everyone is looking for the same qualities. Some people might say the spiciest chile makes the best green chile fries, whereas someone else might have a preference for the crispiest fries and still another might judge based on the amount of pork in the chile.
Here are a few places to sample the city’s green chile fries and decide for yourself which ones meet your standards for taste.
D’Corazon, 1530 Blake St. Here they have the traditional pork and a vegetarian green chile option. Their chile cheese fries come topped with beef and cheese and you’ll get a little spicy kick but not a searing heat from this chile.
Chula on Broadway Cocina Mexicana, 3866 S. Broadway, Englewood. These chile cheese fries come with options to add on top of the homemade green chile such as chicharrones, shredded, chicken, steak, carnitas, or birria. How is this just an appetizer??
Chakas, 6265 E. Evans Ave. The green chile fries at Chakas are more like nachos with potatoes in place of tortilla chips as you can add sour cream and guacamole to make them “supreme,” but also cool the heat with these toppings.
La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant, 2340 Champa St. The chile cheese fries at this Curtis Park institution come in regular, small, and with steak. This old school style Tex-Mex is no frills.
The Original Chubby’s, 1231 W. 38th St. This place is often controversial with people taking issue about its originality or quality. Their food is pretty spicy, in my opinion, and that includes the green chile. You can choose between small, large or Chubby’s size smothered fries, smothered onion rings, or smothered tater tots. For the newbies, “smothered” means covered in green chile.
Hits the Spot Diner, 5637 W. Colfax Ave., Lakewood. Not only does this place offer green chile cheese fries, it’s got a section on their menu just for this specialty. First, you choose fries or tots, and then you get to the toppings (on top of the green chile, that is) that include the usual steak and chicken. However, they are on another level for your taste buds because you can also select two eggs or Italian sausage or….souvlaki. It’s not for the traditionalist, but will “hit the spot” for those interested in a culinary adventure of cultures.
Note that not all restaurants offering green chile smothered on burgers or burritos also offer the green chile cheese fries, so if you don’t see your favorite Tex-Mex spot on this list, maybe suggest they start covering their French fries with some of that Colorado spicy gravy.
