This month, we’re honored to highlight and share our long-standing partnership with Phamaly Theatre Company, a creative home for theatre artists with disabilities.
Founded in 1989, the Phamaly Theatre Company was created when five students from the Boettcher School in Denver, all living with disabilities, who grew frustrated with the lack of theatrical opportunities for people living with disabilities. Phamaly was ahead of its time in building an inclusive organization that directly serves disenfranchised individuals with disabilities from all racial, ethnic, gender, and class identities.
Throughout its 30-year history, Phamaly has maintained its dedication to this principle of inclusion while developing artistic craft, enhancing professional opportunities and employing new methods of access through science and technology. Through its innovative productions, Phamaly advances the social narrative of disability to effect greater inclusion, participation, and respect for people with disabilities in all facets of society.
At every performance, you will see actors with all nature of disabilities: physical, cognitive, intellectual, and emotional. PTC gives actors a supportive space to explore and develop their craft, empowers artists within their disability identity, educates the community about access and inclusion, and entertains audiences with high-quality, award-winning theatre.
.
Denver Center for the Performing Arts is proud to partner with Phamaly in two substantial ways:
Each summer, we co-produce the Phamaly Summer production in partnership in the Kilstrom Theatre at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. This summer production partnership has been celebrated over 20 years.
Together, these efforts make the performing arts more inclusive and help create a world in which the differences within the human condition are celebrated, and the theatre experience is accessible and welcoming to all.
